Cape Girardeau Smoking Ban

There is a movement afoot to implement a smoking ban in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

The groups behind the effort to ban smoking are:

Breathe Easy Missouri

CASE PASS Alliance

The smoking banners are a pretty interesting alliance. On the Breathe Easy Missouri site, at the bottom of the home page, it states,

This website was supported by Cooperative Agreement Number U58/CCU722795-01 between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), Health Promotion Unit. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of CDC or DHSS.

So, Breath Easy Missouri, receives support from both the federal government (CDC) and the Missouri state government (DHSS). Just another case of government – national and state – participating in telling local communities what they should do.

CASE PASS Alliance, on their web site states,

The idea is to use existing campus and community infrastructures to mobilize leaders who will, in turn, influence communities’ health agendas to reduce the use of tobacco. By systematically linking energetic campus-community leaders from educational institutions (from middle schools, high schools and universities) with community groups, we will strengthen the alliance and will be closer to solving the major societal problems related to tobacco.

The model for CASE PASS Alliance looks familiar. Use government (educational institutions, CDC, DHSS) and community groups (hello community organizers) to impose “solutions” on local communities.

This assault on the rights of private property owners and the rights of individuals in not acceptable. It’s time for local communities to stand up and say, “Enough!”.

It appears that those in favor of the smoking ban are gathering signatures on the local campus of Southeast Missouri University (SEMO). I wonder how many of those students signing the smoking ban petition are from the surrounding community? How many signing are even from Missouri?

The City of Cape Girardeau, like many other cities and towns, has had budget problems. It would seem like the last thing Cape Girardeau would want to do is impose a smoking ban that would negatively impact small businesses. While some groups claim that smoking bans have no effect, or even a positive effect, on the economy there are others who disagree, including:

Mike Pakko, from the St. Louis Federal Reserve

Dave Hitt

Jonathan T. Tomlin

If you oppose the smoking ban, please contact Cape Girardeau Mayor, Jay Knudtson, and the Cape Girardeau City Council at the City of Cape Girardeau site.

I also encourage you to continue the battle for freedom and liberty by joining us at Take the State.

The petition will be delivered to the Cape Girardeau, Missouri Mayor and City Council on January, 1 2010.
