Beatweek and Android: Only Vacuum is in Editor’s Head

I can’t help myself. Bill Palmer, editor over at Beatweek Magazine, sent me a snide remark earlier today regarding my preference for Android phones vs. the iPhone. Don’t get me wrong. My wife had an iPhone, and it was a nice phone. For me though, I like my HTC Inspire better.

I have been noticing a pattern on the Beatweek Magazine site. They publish articles as fact that don’t appear to be fact checked very well. Then, if you disagree with what they have to say, Bill Palmer replies calling you an “insulated geek” or something worse.

Their current article on Android phone returns relies on a TechCrunch article with one anonymous source who claims that Android returns are in the 30-40% range. The author of the article also likes to throw around the word geek in phrases such as:

“…tech geek who likes hacker-friendly phones…”

“Noticeably absent was anyone (outside of the geeks) claiming that they moved from iPhone to Android because they thought Android was better.”

“…everyone except Android-worshipping geeks can see the logic in…”

Over on BGR they show the absurdity of claiming Android returns could possibly be so high. If they were it would cost hundreds of millions, if not over a billion dollars and could even put the manufacturers of the phones out of business.

What are the more likely return rate percentages for Android phones?

BGR writes:

So what’s the real number? It’s tough for us to give an across-the-board estimate, of course, but that’s why we have sources. We have been told by three very reliable sources that a safe estimate for Android’s global handset return rate is “in the low single digits.” That’s a pretty far cry from 30% or 40%, we’d say. Of course not all phones are created equal and two sources did mention that some manufacturer bungles have resulted in higher return rates for individual smartphones. By “higher,” we’re talking teens… not 40% or even 30%.

The other Beatweek Android-related article I checked out said that 4 out of 5 Android users were going to bail on Android. The source for the article was CNN. CNN. Consider the source. Anyhow, CNN later corrected their article stating:

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that 20% of Android customers say they’ll buy another Android phone. The survey actually revealed that 20% of all smartphone customers say they’ll buy an Android phone.

As far as I can tell, Beatweek Magazine never bothered to correct their own story which was based on CNN’s report.

We’ll see if Beatweek’s Bill Palmer will correct his magazine’s errors or not. So far, I have checked two articles and they both were erroneous. I wonder if I should check a third article?
